More about Me

Michelle from Threefold Designs and Crafts For Misfits has been interviewing tapestry artists that she has come across through her own interest in weaving tapestry. She is currently a student working towards the Australian Diploma in Tapestry Weaving. Craft And Quilt Fair- Hamilton

Running from Thursday 08 Sep 2011 to Sunday 11 Sep 2011, this event is open to the public for a reasonably small entry fee, and has craft related sales as well as the Quilt Exhibition which features quilts from Australia and New Zealand.

Running in conjunction with this is the Creative Fibre Experience exhibition. This is a good opportunity to see some of New Zealand's finest hand spun, woven, felted or fibre based exhibits in one large exhibiting arena.

It is also an opportunity to network and catch up with friends for the day.

Creative Fibre Festival 2012 Marlborough

Here are the dates for the National Creative Fibre Festival 2012 in Marlborough. The team down there has set up a blog site that you can visit. Go to http://fibrefestival2012.blogspot.com/ to find out all you need to know about their planning and activities thus far. The blog also has a link to their face book page if you would rather follow what they are doing that way.

The emphasis of this festival is to Interest, Educate and Inspire no matter what area of the fibre arts your particular interest is in.

The National Festival runs from 12pm Thursday 26th to Sunday 29th April 2012 and will be held at the Marlborough Convention Centre in Blenheim, with the Exhibition on display at the Millennium Public Art Gallery.

TWIST IN THAMES

"Twist in Thames" is the title of this National Creative Fibre Festival, offering a feast of activities for fibre fans. Based in Te Puru along the Thames Coast Road heading towards Coromandel Township, this is a beautiful area to spend a few days, or just a great opportunity to take a road trip with a couple of friends for the day.

Although it is not a full festival as it has a smaller theme based exhibition instead of the usual large Exhibition format, there will be plenty to see and do with guest speakers, fibre related sales and spinning, knitting and weaving action competitions.

It runs over the last weekend of April, from Thursday the 28th April until Sunday the 1st May. The creative fibre website is your point of contact.

Training and Artists Background

I have been weaving since 1987. That was the year I began a full time study in an 18 month long class in fibre design and construction. Our training was under part of the Takitimu Trust creative arts and music umbrella. The course included weaving flax, percentage dying, classing and spinning wool and of course on-loom weaving.

During the 1990's I was living in Coromandel, and it was during this time that I was well involved with the very strongly supported local performing and visual arts movement. This was when I also completed my Certificate in Adult Teaching.

In 2000 I moved to Auckland and opened a Workshop & Gallery, where I set up my loom.

I now live on the Awhitu Peninsula which is situated on the south-west side of the Manukau Harbour.

Alliances

I have been an active member of the N.Z. Tapestry Network participating in several Travelling Suitcase Exhibitions. I have been a member of the N.Z. Professional Weavers Network since 2009, and am a National Tutor for Creative Fibre NZ, offering classes in design, paper-making and tapestry weaving. I have had work shown in the N.Z. Creative Fibre Magazine and the Australian Textile Fibre Magazine. I also gained my Certificate In Adult Teaching in 1999 which was run by well known tutor Penny Brownlee.

I like to show my work bi-annually at community exhibition venues, and have been an invited guest of several group exhibitions and accepted at National Exhibitions many times over the years.
